The Amazing Race 10

The Amazing Race 10 is the tenth installment of the US reality television show The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world. Professional models Tyler Denk and James Branaman were the winners of this season. A DVD was released on May 1, 2013, courtesy of Amazon's CreateSpace program.

Production

Development and filming

The Amazing Race 10 spanned 40,000 miles (64,000 km) and covered 4 continents and 13 countries, the most countries visited in a season. Among them, six were previously unvisited by the series, including Mongolia, Kuwait, Mauritius, Madagascar, Finland, and Ukraine. None of those countries have been revisited by the series. It was also the first season to (nearly) circumnavigate the globe in a generally westward fashion, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg and crossing the Atlantic on the final leg. Most other seasons transversed the globe in a generally eastward direction.

The Amazing Race 10 saw the show's first double elimination when in one leg, two teams were eliminated: one halfway through the leg, and the other at the end. It also introduced a new race marker, the Intersection, which involved having two teams work together until otherwise instructed. If no other team was available when one team read the Intersection clue, they were required to wait for another team to arrive before proceeding together. The Intersection was also shown in conjunction with a Fast Forward: when the first pair of teams completed the task, both of those teams received the benefit of the award.

Additionally, the penalty for coming in last on a non-elimination leg was changed. Instead of being stripped of money and possessions, the last place team was "Marked for Elimination". This had a consequence for the following leg, where the marked team suffered a 30-minute penalty at the Pit Stop (unless they were first to check-in), possibly allowing other teams to overtake them in the final placings for that leg.

During the Vietnam legs, all route markers were colored yellow and white rather than red and yellow, so as to avoid confusion with the flag of the former independent state of South Vietnam; these were also the original route markers in season 1. The second Vietnamese leg was also the first time in the series in which teams received race money in local currency.

Episode 4 (which contained Leg 4) was selected by CBS for consideration in the 2007 Emmy Awards, and garnered five total nominations, including one for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The episode won for Outstanding Reality-Competition, the show's fifth consecutive win in that category, having won since the category was first awarded in 2003.

Cast

Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February and early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006.

The cast of The Amazing Race 10 was increased to 12 teams for the first time since season 4. It included best friends, a couple, college cheerleaders, boyfriends, brothers, a team member with a prosthetic leg, recovered drug addicts, beauty pageant queens, and a pair of single mothers.

Lyn & Karlyn were the first all-female team to make the final 3.

Dustin & Kandice along with David & Mary were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars among a cast of returning teams from the first 10 seasons. David & Mary also appeared on The View where they received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house. Jamie Hill was later crowned Miss South Carolina USA 2008, and competed in the Miss USA Pageant in Las Vegas on April 11, 2008.

While Peter & Sarah were portrayed as a newly dating and bickering couple on the race (to the extent that Sarah "broke up" with Peter during their elimination in Kuwait), Sarah Reinertsen revealed that they were friends whose "dating" was non-existent and created to give them an interesting storyline, although she did say that her displeasure over Peter's cold and hectoring behavior on the race was genuine.

Following the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, Terry Cosentino proposed to Tom Rock in December 2013, having led Rock on a small-scale Amazing Race-styled trip through New York with assistance from Keoghan and other friends. The two married on November 12, 2016.

• A red team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
• An underlined blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg of the race and was "Marked for Elimination"; if the team did not finish 1st on the next leg, they would receive a 30-minute penalty.

The first Roadblock of the race requires one team member to eat eyeballs from a fish head soup, a Chinese delicacy, for their next clue.

The first Detour of the race was a choice between Labor or Leisure. In Labor, teams had to travel one mile (1.6 km) by pedicab to Run De Li Market, where they needed to use traditional Chinese bricks and methods to pave a 45-square-foot (4 m²) section of sidewalk in a specific pattern. In Leisure, teams had to take a pedicab to Beihai Park to participate in a Chinese relaxation method known as Taiji Bailong, in which they need to successfully balance a ball on a paddle for the next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, teams would have to find a kiosk and pick a slot for one of three departure times in the following morning at 15-minute intervals, starting at 7:00 a.m., 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.. The first eleven teams would be given overnight rest, while the last team to arrive here was eliminated from the Race at this point.
• Upon departure on the next morning, teams had to take to a sidecar motorbike to North Bank Road at Houhai and find the Pedicab Manager to receive their next clue.
• At the Great Wall of China along Juyongguan, teams used a rope to scale the wall and climb to reach the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (China â†' Mongolia)

During the Pit Stop, teams traveled back to Beijing to begin this leg of the Race. For this Detour, teams have to wear traditional Mongolian army hats and ride horses 2.5 miles (4 km) until they reached the nomadic-lifestyle Detour, a choice of Take It Down or Fill It Up. In Take It Down, teams chose a yurt from among ten traditional nomadic shelters, took the canvas and roof down, packaged it for transport, and loaded it onto a camel. In Fill It Up, teams had to take a cart pulled by a hynik, an indigenous ox, 500 yards (460 m) to a river to fill four water containers, then bring them back to fill a barrel to a designated line. A nomad would give them their next clue.

In this Roadblock, one team member had to string a traditional Mongolian bow and shoot a flaming arrow at a target 160 feet (49 m) away. After hitting the target, the team could run to the Pit Stop at a pavilion on a hill.

Additional tasks

• At Choijin Lama Monastery, teams had to observe a Buddhist ceremony before receiving their next clue.
• The clue received after the task teams instructed to drive a Soviet-era military jeep to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, located near a riverbed in Terelj.
• After completing the Detour, teams rode horses back to the park's entrance.

Leg 3 (Mongolia â†' Vietnam)

During the Pit Stop, teams were moved to Chinggis Khaan Hotel to begin this leg of the Race. For this Roadblock, one team member had to choose a Vietnamese bicycle with a basket of flowers to sell enough to make at least 80,000â‚« (VND â€" approximately US$5). When the florist was satisfied with their work, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Fuel and Fowl. In Fuel, teams had to travel to the home of Nguyĕn Văn Thuý and make 30 round coal bricks, a traditional Vietnamese fuel source, by putting wet coal in a traditional press. When they properly assembled all 30 bricks, a coal maker would give them their next clue. In Fowl, teams traveled to Nhà Thò where they had to use traditional local materials to build an intricate Vietnamese birdcage. When the birdcage was properly constructed, they would receive their next clue.

Additional task

• At Hỏa Lò Prison (known as the "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War), teams had to search the grounds to find a room with John McCain's flight suit to receive their next clue.

Additional note

• While they were informed that they were not given any money at the start of this leg, only the Roadblock task would allow teams to collect their money. Teams are prohibited from collecting any money in other places, including the option to beg or sell anything.. Teams were still allowed to buy airline tickets to Hanoi.

Leg 4 (Vietnam)

The Roadblock requires one team to use a mechanical ascender to climb 90 feet (27 m) up the sheer face of the cliff at Hon Yen Ngua, retrieve their clue, and then rappel down to finish the task.

The Detour was a choice between Over or Under. In both Detours, teams were taken to the water by a junk, then given a sampan to row. In Over, teams had to row to a provisions ship, load supplies onto the sampan, then row to a floating village to deliver goods to the specific addresses on their invoice. When finished, teams rowed back to the provisions ship and present the finished invoice to the captain, who would give them their next clue. In Under, teams had to take a marked buoy and row the sampan to a pearl farm, where they chose a line of buoys and haul 30 baskets out of the sea and into their boats. They had to deliver the baskets to a pearl farmer to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the leg, teams had to pick up 588,000â‚« (approximately $37). They will then travel to Ly Thai To Garden in Hanoi, where they had to listen to their next clue recited by megaphone: "Attention racers! Here is your clue! Taxi across the Red River to Ben Xe Gia Lam. Then take a bus to Ben Xe Bai Chay. Then find the Hydrofoil Harbor." They had to determine that their next destination was at the Hydrofoil Harbor in Hạ Long, where teams would encounter a Yield (unaired) and their next clue.
• The clue after the Roadblock instructed teams to travel by motorboat to Sá»­ng Sá»'t Cave.
• After the Detour, teams have to take a junk to Soi Sim Island for the Pit Stop.

Leg 5 (Vietnam â†' India)

The Detour was a choice between Wild Things or Wild Rice. In Wild Things, teams had to make their way nine miles (14 km) to Madras Crocodile Bank, locate pit 16, and help the workers wrangle a marsh crocodile and transport it to a new pit, to receive the next clue. In Wild Rice, teams made their way 200 yards (180 m) to Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal Temple, where they chose an outline of a traditional floral design shown on the temple floor. Using a picture for reference, they had to use colored powder made from rice to color-in the outline so that it matched the picture. Once they were complete, they could receive their next clue.

For the Roadblock, one team member had to attend a driver's education class, then navigate the congested streets for a driving test while driving on the left-hand side of the road. When they passed the driving test and obtained an Indian driver's license, they received their next clue which would direct teams to drive the instructor's car to the Pit Stop at Chettinad House.

Leg 6 (India â†' Kuwait)

The Fast Forward requires one team to wear protective gear and use a flame retardant shield to approach a simulated oil fire at the oil well on 6th Ring Road, with temperatures of over 1,000 °F (538 °C), to retrieve the Fast Forward clue from a cluebox.

Other teams had to take the Roadblock, where one team member had to climb a ladder to the top of one of the towers, 610 feet (190 m) above the ground, to receive a satchel filled with puzzle pieces. They then had to go to the ground and assemble the puzzle to reveal the name of the street which was their next destination.

The Detour of this leg was a choice between Manual or Automatic. In Manual, teams drove to an area known as Souk Sulabiya and had to fill ten 110-pound (50 kg) bags of camel feed to a marked line. When all ten bags were filled, they had to transport them 100 yards (91 m) to a pallet and properly stack them to receive their next clue. In Automatic, teams went to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club where they used a walkie-talkie to operate a voice activated robotic jockey attached to a camel. When the camel ran a 140-yard (130 m) course, a wrangler would give them their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the leg, teams received a mobile phone with a video message for their next destination, which they had to determine was Kuwait Towers. After flying to Kuwait City, they had to pick a marked vehicle and travel to the towers for their next clue.
• At Souk Al-Gharabally, teams had to find a marked stall in the marketplace, where they found their clue for the Detour.

Leg 7 (Kuwait â†' Mauritius)

There was a Roadblock in this leg, however it was not aired. The clue is clearly visible with Dustin & Kandice in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website.

The Detour was a choice between Salt or Sea. In Salt, teams had to search through three giant piles of salt, the key of the country's economy, for a salt shaker containing their next clue. In Sea, teams had to choose a boat pilot, then travel by motorboat to Île aux Benitiers 2.5 miles (4 km) away. There, they had to search the island using a treasure map to find the boat's sail. They will then carry it back to the boat by attaching it, and sail back to the starting point to finish the task.

Additional task

• After arriving at Mauritius, teams had to search inside a marked car for a model boat, which had the clue "Isla Mauritia" and "Swim to Me". Teams had to determine their next location was Grand Baie, where they had to swim to the ship for their next clue.

Leg 8 (Mauritius â†' Madagascar)

Airdate: November 5, 2006

There was an Intersection in Antananarivo, where teams were required to work together in pairs to make decisions and complete tasks until further notice. In this Fast Forward, one pair of newly joined teams had to visit Analakely Market to eat one full serving of beef muzzle, a French-inspired local delicacy. When they cleaned their plates, the two teams would win the Fast Forward award.

Otherwise, the teams had to complete the Detour, a choice between Long Sleep or Short Letter. In Long Sleep, teams traveled by van 2.2 miles (3.5 km) to an open market where they had to wrap eight mattresses with a cover and deliver them on foot approximately one mile (1.6 km) through the streets of Antananarivo to a specific address. When they delivery all eight, the homeowner would give them their next clue. In Short Letter, teams traveled by van 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to a paper-working station where they had to work together to successfully make 28 pieces of handcrafted paper. When the artisan signalled that they had correctly made their paper, they would receive their next clue. Intersection ends after the Detour task, and teams had to continue the leg individually.

The Roadblock requires one team member to go up steep staircases and find four different rubber stamp vendors with matching stamps to their clue (a boat, train, airplane, and car). When they had collected all four stamps, they could then proceed to the Pit Stop at Cathedral Andohalo where their teammates were waiting.

Additional task

• Upon arriving in its capital of Antananarivo, teams have to find the Black Angel statue in Lac Anosy for the Intersection road marker.

Leg 9 (Madagascar â†' Finland â†' Ukraine)

The first Detour of the leg were methods made by the Finnish athletes to keep themselves in shape during the warmer months: Swamp This or Swamp That. Both options are methods by which Finnish athletes keep themselves in shape during the warmer months. In Swamp This, teams have to trudge through a bog on cross country skis, completing a one-mile (1.6 km) course. In Swamp That, teams had to complete an obstacle course through a bog, requiring them to crawl, climb, and carry each other.

The first Roadblock of the leg requires one team member to ride a bike down a steep hill and search the Lohja mine for a marked dig site. There, teams retrieve a piece of limestone, and then return to the starting point. They would then use the provided tools to break the limestone open to retrieve their next clue from inside.

In the second Roadblock of the leg, one team member had to command a Soviet T-64 Tank through a 1.5-mile (2,400 m) oval-shaped training course used for simulated military exercises. When they successfully completed the course, the officer would hand out their next clue.

The musical-themed Detour was a choice of Make the Music or Find the Music. For both Detours, teams had to dress up to blend in with the people. In Make the Music, teams traveled three miles (4.8 km) to Dance & Groove, a hip hop/dance club in Kiev's underground rap movement, and had to perform a rap song incorporating the names of all of the nations visited so far on the Race. When the judge approved their show, they were given the next clue. In Find the Music, the teams had to go 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the Ukrainian National Music Academy. There, they had to search through thousands of pieces of sheet music for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra. When they had the correct music, they needed to search 120 practice rooms for one of six pianists to perform the piece for them. When the pianist completed the piece, they would get their next clue.

Additional tasks

• After arriving Helsinki, teams make their way to Kappeli Café and find the marked laptop, which they used to log in to AOL to watch a video from their loved ones. After which, the owner of the café would give them their next clue.
• Teams would then traveled by train to Tampere and by taxi to the city of Ylöjärvi, to find Soppeenharjun Koulu. From there, they followed a marked path and searched the grounds outside the school, where they could get their next clue.
• The clue after the first Detour instructs teams to travel by train to Turku, then to the Tytyri Limestone Mine in the town of Lohja, for the next clue.
• At Helsinki Olympic Stadium, teams were sent the top of the 236-foot (72 m) tower. They then had to do a face-first rappel known as an Angel Dive. As teams completed this task, they receive their clue to inform that they have to keep racing. On broadcast on the second episode, the clue instead instructed teams to travel to the country of the Chernobyl disaster, and had to determine that their destination is Ukraine. Upon arrival to its capital of Kiev, they were provided with a Soviet-era Volga cars for transportation means along with their next clue.
• After completing the second Roadblock, teams were instructed to return to Kiev and find an apartment address for their next clue.

Additional note

• Due to limited availability of flights out of Madagascar, teams were given reserved seats on a flight from Antananarivo to Paris, but were under no obligation to use them; all of the teams made other arrangements.

Leg 10 (Ukraine â†' Morocco)

Airdate: November 26, 2006

In the Roadblock, one team member had to dress like an ancient gladiator and race a chariot. While racing, they would have to pull down two colored flags matching the livery of their horse. Once they possessed both flags, the Charioteer would give them their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Throw It or Grind It. In Throw It, teams traveled four miles (6.4 km) to Guedara to a marked pottery shop, where they made two clay pots. The potter would give them their next clue when the pots were made to his specifications. In Grind It, teams traveled four miles (6.4 km) towards Ouarzazate to North Africa Horse, where they had to use crushing mills to grind 77 pounds (35 kg) of olives and pack them into bags. When they had properly crushed and packed the olives, the olive miller would give them their next clue. Depending on which Detour the teams choose, each side of the Detour had workstations for three teams.

• At the Ouarzazate's Kasbah district, teams have to search for an antique shop known as Antiquittés du Sud. There, they have to pick up their next clue along with one of four pendants (one of which was a good luck charm which they could exchange for a prize at the Pit Stop).
• At the Atlas Film Studios, teams had to search beneath the studio's backlot for both a Yield marker along with their next clue.
• After completing the Detour, teams have to drive towards Marrakech until they reached a marker, where they turned into the desert to the Berber camp that served as the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Morocco â†' Spain)

The Roadblock requires one team member to find a stall and take one pound (0.45 kg) of camel meat to a stall called Cafe 11. There, they ground and skewered the meat, and they have to the dish that a chef to prepared from a traditional Moroccan recipe to receive the next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Lug It or Lob It. In Lug It, teams had to walk a distance from Las Ramblas to Maremagnum bridge and get into giant costumes known as gigantes y cabezudos. In these giant costumes, they then had to walk over a mile to find a female giant in Plaça de Sant Felip Neri to receive their next clue. In Lob It, teams had to travel to Colònia Güell and take part in a tomato festival. While locals threw tomatoes at them (as done in the festival), they had to search a giant pile of tomatoes for the one with a clue inside.

Additional tasks

• From the Berber Camp, teams had to drive to the country's largest city of Casablanca. There, teams have to make their way to Quartier des Habous and search the marketplace for their next clue.
• At Parc del Laberint d'Horta in Barcelona, teams had to search the maze for their next clue.

Leg 12 (Spain â†' France â†' United States)

In the final Roadblock of the race, one team member had to perform a 13,000-foot (4,000 m) tandem skydive, with a skydive instructor, over Normandy. The other team member would remain in the plane, was treated to a surprise nosedive. The skydiver would land on Omaha Beach, and was taken to Bayeux train station in a military jeep, where they were reunited with their partner who arrived by taxi.

The final Detour of the race were choices between Art or Fashion. In Art, they had to go to an art studio. There, teams would pick up a painting and carry it through the streets to a painter who was waiting to complete it. Once the painting was finished, they would receive their next clue. In Fashion, teams had to travel by foot to Anatomy Fashion Studio where they had to make a jacket, using the tools and materials provided, and put it on a mannequin for display. When the designer approved their work, she would give them their next clue.

Additional tasks

• Their first clue for the final leg instructed teams to travel to "a church that has been under construction for over 124 years". Teams had to figure out that their next clue was located at Sagrada Família.
• Once at Paris, teams had to head to the Eiffel Tower and use the elevator to find the next clue.
• Upon arrival at New York City, they had to find the Daily News Building and search for their next clue at a giant globe. Their given clue had a photograph of Alamo with instructions to travel there by foot. There, teams had to find a woman in a yellow cap who would give them their final clue.
